Annual inflation rate in France held steady at 2.2% in May 2024, the same as in April, and below forecasts of 2.4%. It remains the lowest inflation rate since September 2021, preliminary estimates showed. Prices rose faster for food (1.3% vs 1.2%), namely fresh products (3.5% vs -0.7%) and energy (5.8% vs 3.8%), but eased for services (2.7% vs 3%) and tobacco (8.7% vs 9%). Prices were little changed for manufacturers (0% vs -0.1%). Compared to the previous month, the CPI stalled, following a 0.5% increase in April, mainly due to a sharp drop in energy prices, particularly petroleum products, that offset increases in food and, to a lesser extent, manufactured products. Considering the EU-harmonised figures however, the annual rate increased to 2.7% from 2.4% and much higher than forecasts of 2.5%. The monthly rate eased to 0.2% from 0.6% as expected. source: INSEE, France
